Highland Historic District

What is the Historic District?

The Highland Historic District in Shreveport, Louisiana is a long-established residential neighborhood with deep historic and architectural roots. It is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places because of its importance in reflecting the city’s growth around the turn of the twentieth century and its rich collection of historic homes.

This district was developed beginning in the 1890s on what was known as the “high land” just south of downtown Shreveport and grew as the city expanded outward. It became one of Shreveport’s earliest and most significant suburban neighborhoods at the time.

Rich History

The area is known for its architectural diversity, with hundreds of homes and buildings showcasing styles such as colonial revival, bungalow/craftsman, and queen anne. These structures date from the late 1800s into the early 20th century and collectively represent an important slice of architectural history in northern Louisiana.

Today the Highland Historic District remains a lived-in neighborhood with tree-lined streets and a mix of residential, cultural, and community spaces. It is also a center of local events and community life, including music festivals and tours celebrating the neighborhood’s character and history.
